Henry McMaster&#8217;s first time running for a full four-year term. In 2016, he was appointed governor after then-Gov. Eight more years!\u201d The chants of the GOP faithful rang out at\u00a0the \u00a0GOP watch party Tuesday night a<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s Republicans gathered to cheer on a victorious Gov. Henry McMaster.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0McMaster,\u00a0<\/span>appointed governor in 2016 after Gov. Nikki Haley was tapped to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, secured his first full term by defeating Democratic Rep. James Smith. Smith is a longtime State House veteran who touted his military experience and his support of Medicaid expansion.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am proud of the people of South Carolina,\u201d McMaster told the cheering crowd. \u00a0\u201cEverywhere I go as your governor, I know I stand two or three inches a little bit taller just because I\u2019m so proud to represent the people of South Carolina and I\u2019m thrilled to have the chance to do it for four more years.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The traditionally red state also welcomed the first female Republican lieutenant governor, Pamela Evette. She was joined by her husband, daughter, and two sons on stage. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI want to thank you South Carolina for changing the course of my life and also changing the course of history by making me the first female Republican lieutenant governor in South Carolina,\u201d said Evette, of \u00a0Travelers Rest, who brings her business background to the legislature. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This election was also the first to ever have the gubernatorial and lieutenant governor candidates on the same ticket. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The NBC network was kept on the big television screen throughout the night, and cheers rose every time a congressional seat was confirmed red. <span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">There were times the room went quiet as it<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>it became clear that Democrats would take over the U.S. House of Representative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0The crowd kept a close eye on the Texas race between U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and his challenger Beto O\u2019Rourke.
