Courtesy Historic Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.92&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;2px|0px|37.9062px|0px&#8221; prev_background_color=&#8221;#000000&#8243; next_background_color=&#8221;#000000&#8243;][et_pb_row custom_padding=&#8221;0px|0px|18.9531px|0px&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;10px|||&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.0.92&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;News Story&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;3.20.1&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;0px||0px|&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When &#8220;The Green Book&#8221; motion picture hit theaters last November, the knowledge and history of the real Green Book <strong>&#8211;<\/strong> the one that was created for traveling African Americans to find safe places to eat, shop, and sleep\u00a0<strong>&#8211;<\/strong> came to light. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With exhibits of the Green Book on display in places like the Thomas Cooper Library and documentaries about the Green Book filmed and created in places like the South Carolina State Museum,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">much of the Green Book&#8217;s history remains a vibrant part of the Midlands.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the north side of Wayne Street in downtown Columbia, a two-story white clapboard house is nondescript except for the historical marker planted in the yard. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reginald &#8220;Reggie&#8221; Scott lives in that house. Born in Virginia, he was a baby when he moved into the home owned by his aunt, Harriet Scott.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this house located in Columbia&#8217;s Arsenal Hill neighborhood was more than just a home to the family.\u00a0It was a Green Book home known then as the Harriet Cornwell Tourist Home, a place of respite for African-Americans from around the country. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had two kinds of travelers,\u201d he said. \u201cWe had door travelers &#8211; \u00a0people coming in during the night &#8211; and we had school teachers who would rent rooms during the school year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time the house became a Green Book home, Harriet Scott was a teacher at Waverly School. She started opening her home to travelers and fellow teachers in 1940<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and kept up her efforts until 1960. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scott\u00a0says the success of the Green Book was in the secrecy. He says if someone owned a home listed in the Green Book, no one in their community knew about it. Only those coming from out of town knew those locations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the children who grew up in Green Book homes, like Scott, definitely did not know that well-kept secret. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I come back 50 years and they were like \u2018Green Book, Green Book,\u2019 I was like, what is that,\u201d said Scott, a jazz musician and ex-convict who is has his own story to tell.
