The family&#8217;s new movement,\u00a0Limitless Purpose, encourages the community to encourage inclusion for those with disabilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Padgett Mozingo and her husband Mark were told that their second child would be born with a heart defect and Down syndrome, they didn\u2019t know the obstacles they would face. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany were quick to suggest to us that we should maybe not even continue our pregnancy and that her quality of life wouldn&#8217;t be high,&#8221; Padgett Mozingo said. &#8220;When you see her and meet her you find out she has nothing less than a high quality of life. She has an incredible quality of life, she is the light of a room, she is a bundle of energy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 1,000 births has an incidence of Down syndrome. Over 200,000 cases of Down syndrome are reported in the United States every single year. People with this disability have a genetic condition,\u00a0trisomy 21, that causes them to have an extra copy of chromosome 21.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Lila\u2019s seven years, the Mozingo family has tried to place her in environments that encourage her to reach her potent<span style=\"color: #000000;\">ial, a<\/span>nd interact with people who don\u2019t make assumptions because of her disability. She is the inspiration and the face behind this movement. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe truly believe that she&#8217;s limitless if we don\u2019t put labels on her and we don&#8217;t make assumptions about what she can\u2019t do in life. We don&#8217;t have any idea what she will accomplish and we should challenge her to reach her full potential,\u201d said Padgett Mozingo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limitless Purpose is pushing for more inclusion in education for those with disabilities. It hasn\u2019t been easy for\u00a0Lila to get the same opportunities that other children have in public education, her mother said, so she was enrolled in a Montessori school where Lila is the only student in the classroom with a disability. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe just haven&#8217;t had as easy of a road to get other people to understand that and accept that. So for her to be in an inclusive classroom with typically developing peers who are learning typically developing language and math, those things are important,&#8221; Padgett Mozingo said. &#8220;Those are life skills, they translate to more than just academics.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Lila walked around the lobby of the\u00a0State House, tapping people on the arm and giving them a bracelet, clay thumbprint and a flyer, smiles and laughter followed.\u00a0The Mozingos chose this year to begin Limitless Purpose because of the many reforms and conversations about education at the state house. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe recognize they have a huge job, there are lots of things in our education system that need attention&#8230;We don\u2019t want them to forget that children with disabilities need to be considered in that,\u201d said Padgett Mozingo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving forward, Limitless Purpose has ambition to continue raising awareness and helping people understand that those with disabilities are capable and deserve a chance. They also hope to become a nonprofit in the future and serve more children succeed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA person is a person, and they have a disability. Their diagnosis is a part of who they are, but many times it represents the \u00a0challenges and the hard work they\u2019re had to do to accomplish the same things,\u201d said Padgett Mozingo. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The family\u00a0wants\u00a0others to see Lila&#8217;s capabilities so that they can begin to let go of assumptions they have made about people with disabilities. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWho knows what the future holds? But if we don\u2019t give her a chance and we don\u2019t challenge her, she\u2019s destined for the same old thing, and that\u2019s not acceptable,\u201d said Padgett Mozingo. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_3&#8243;][et_pb_image admin_label=&#8221;Image 1&#8243;
