While\u00a0both groups engaged in verbal attacks, no violence broke out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wil Lane, 37-year-old from Lexington, proudly waved a Trump 2020 flag in front of Benedict College while smoking a cigar. His reason for showing his support for Trump were simple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m a patriot first and foremost. I wanted to yell,\u201d said Lane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And yell they did. In the tradition of American protest, they shouted and waved signs, and tried to persuade opponents of the righteousness of their arguments.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gary Voltor, 60-year-old Columbia resident, wore a bright orange traffic vest and led many chants with his megaphone. He said there are a lot of reasons why he came protest Trump\u2019s arrival.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am a progressive, anti-Trump protester which is basically what my life has been for the last two and a half years,\u201d Voltor said.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tensions between the two groups remained high even after the president&#8217;s motorcade left the college around 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his speech Friday to a invitation-only crowd, Trump touted bipartisan legislation called the First Steps Act which would, among other things, ease mandatory minimum sentences for federal prisoners who are serving lengthy prison time for non-violent drug offenses. But the impeachment inquiry was also on his mind as he referred to the work of House Democrats as a &#8220;witch hunt.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> D<\/span>emocratic candidates mentioned the president&#8217;s impeachment inquiry in their speeches.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Benedict College students didn&#8217;t get to see the president in person. They were told to remain in their dorms as the campus was on lockdown during the president\u2019s visit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt astounds me that he came to a historically black college. I&#8217;m not real sure how he managed to get there,\u201d said Patricia Cannon, a 55-year-old protester from Charleston. \u201cI think it was a slap in the face to most of the people that attend college there.\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cannon said she attended the protest to bring awareness to current issues.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump\u2019s visit to an HBCU created so much controversy that Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin had to moderate a dispute with one of the candidates and the weekend forum sponsor, the 20\/20 Bipartisan Justice Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before Saturday\u2019s event, California Sen. Kamala Harris announced she would be pulling out of the event because so many HBCU students were excluded from Trump\u2019s speech. She also objected to a decision by the 20\/20 Bipartisan Justice Center to award Trump with the Bipartisan Justice Award for his work on criminal justice reform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Harris did end up speaking after the sponsorship was changed. However, throughout the day Saturday it was unclear whether the 20\/20 Bipartisan Justice Center was no longer sponsoring her as she spoke in the same venue as the other nine candidates.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a proud graduate from an HBCU, as someone who has worked on criminal justice reform, yes I said that I would not participate. And I did not participate in the program,\u201d Harris said, speaking to reporters after giving her speech.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker echoed a similar sentiment during his speech by saying it was unacceptable that Trump filled the venue with people he brought instead of students and community members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMembers from the broader community were not included and these are the folks who deserve to hear from this president,\u201d Booker said at the opening of his speech.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with Harris and Booker, other candidates who spoke on Saturday included former Rep. John Delaney, Mayor Pete Buttigeg of South Bend, Indiana, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and former Vice President Joe Biden. On Sunday, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, HUD secretary Julian Castro and Hawaii Sen.
