Two free-standing steel racks hold blank merchandise \u2013 hoodies, T-shirts, crewnecks, windbreakers, and swim trunks.<\/p>\n<p>Three desks support the equipment needed to print designs onto blank merchandise, including a desktop computer, a printer used specifically for printing on fabric, a heat press, and a sewing machine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModern, simple, subtle, culture,\u201d Allen, who often sports his own designs, says. \u201cThose are four words that wrap it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allen designs simplistic, retro graphics. Boring Cloth\u2019s most popular piece is a hoodie with a rough outline of Charlotte\u2019s skyline. Other popular designs include T-shirts and hoodies with the numbers \u201c704\u201d or \u201c803\u201d \u2013 two area codes for Charlotte and its surrounding South Carolina towns. Donaldson says she loves Boring Cloth because Allen \u201cdoes it all himself and really cares about quality and satisfaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allen doesn\u2019t manufacture his merchandise. He buys blank garments from\u00a0brands like Champion and then designs the graphics and prints them onto the garment.<\/p>\n<p>While he designs and creates the graphics for his clothing, Allen says he doesn\u2019t like to call himself an artist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just have ideas,\u201d Allen says. \u201cI call myself an idea-ist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The process<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Allen cranks up his desktop computer.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s just received 300 orders after his first TikTok went viral overnight.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s got his work cut out for him.<\/p>\n<p>From beginning to end \u2013 printing to preparing for shipment \u2013 the process can take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes per piece. He\u2019s looking at anywhere from 25 to 150 hours to wrap up this order.<\/p>\n<p>Simple designs, like Boring Cloth\u2019s classic \u201ccross hoodie\u201d \u2013 a hoodie with a small cross \u2013 run through the printer quickly. More complex designs, like the \u201cbaby hoodie\u201d \u2013 which features a sketch of Charlotte rapper DaBaby \u2013 take longer.<\/p>\n<p>Boring Cloth\u2019s recipe for a successful print involves four steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Print the graphic onto blank merchandise, sometimes more than once for more intricate designs<\/li>\n<li>Allow the ink to fully dry<\/li>\n<li>Use a heat press to press the ink into the fabric<\/li>\n<li>Sew on the signature Boring Cloth tag<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How Boring Cloth came to be<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Allen decided to start Boring Cloth after he jokingly drew a small sailboat on the front of a plain Walmart sweatshirt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I was listening to Lil Yachty, just doodling,\u201d Allen said.<\/p>\n<p>Allen wore the sweatshirt to school the next day and got a lot of compliments from his peers, which he said was unusual. \u201cI might\u2019ve gotten a compliment on my shoes every once in a while, but never on clothes,\u201d Allen said.<\/p>\n<p>Allen posted a picture of it to his Snapchat story and within a couple hours someone had asked to buy it from him. \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe he offered $45,\u201d Allen said. \u201cI was like, \u2018You can\u2019t tell I drew this with a Sharpie?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allen said he always wanted to start a clothing brand. \u201cI wanted stuff on clothes that nobody had,\u201d Allen said.<\/p>\n<p>He got to work, spending his evenings designing graphics and brainstorming.<\/p>\n<p>He knew he wanted to keep his designs simple because that was the style that most appealed to him. Now he just needed to think of a name that best defined his brand.<\/p>\n<p>He said he thought to himself, \u201cWhat about Boring Cloth? It\u2019s not very flowy, but it\u2019s a cool way to describe simple designs and it could be such a conversation starter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within a couple weeks, Boring Cloth was up and running out of the bonus room above the family\u2019s garage.<\/p>\n<p>Allen\u2019s original mission was \u201cto give people a way to wear and express their culture, ideas, and values, especially in the Carolinas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sales were slow starting off. \u201cI got a few orders every couple of weeks,\u201d Allen said.<\/p>\n<p>Since its launch, Boring Cloth has made 1,600 sales. Allen\u2019s mission has not changed, but his reach extends beyond the Carolinas.<\/p>\n<p>The brand\u2019s website, boringcloth.com, includes a widget that shows what items have been added to someone\u2019s cart and in what city. Boring Cloth has buyers from British Columbia, Canada, to Queens, New York, to Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>Noah Lalli, a friend of Allen, was by his side when he decided to start Boring Coth. Lalli said he knew Allen\u2019s brand would take off. \u201cHis designs are simple and intriguing, a lot like Supreme,\u201d Lalli said.<\/p>\n<p>Supreme is a luxury brand whose designs have a similar feel to Boring Cloth\u2019s. \u201cI knew people would see that brand association and want to buy his stuff,\u201d Lalli said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Running full speed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Allen has seen a huge spike in sales since he started promoting the brand on TikTok. After posting the first one on Feb. 22, which has now received over 239,000 views, he received 300 orders over night.<\/p>\n<p>He says the orders have continued to flow in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, I haven\u2019t really felt like I was running full speed until now,\u201d Allen said. \u201cNow I\u2019m just like \u2018Damn, I\u2019ve really just been screwing around.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-32603 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/carolinanewsandreporter.cic.sc.edu\/test\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/BoringG1W_ML-256x300.jpg\" alt=\"Boring Cloth website graphic\" width=\"256\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carolinanewsandreporter.cic.sc.edu\/test\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/BoringG1W_ML-256x300.jpg 256w, https:\/\/carolinanewsandreporter.cic.sc.edu\/test\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/BoringG1W_ML.jpg 354w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of February, Boring Cloth collaborated with Chubba Vintage, a vintage clothing brand Allen\u2019s friend, Noah Lalli created. Chubba Vintage resells vintage clothes through Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration was a way to help promote both brands, and did so by creating a design that was featured on a hoodie. The \u201cBORINGCLOTH x CHUBBA VINTAGE\u201d hoodie, which depicted a retro arcade machine and both brands&#8217; Instagram handles, was available for a limited time.<\/p>\n<p>Allen is excited about an opportunity to collaborate with Five Oh, a local skate shop in Fort Mill.<\/p>\n<p>In the near future, Boring Cloth will launch a hoodie design that features a simple skateboard graphic and the phrase \u201cBORING CLOTH x FIVE OH.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five Oh also wants Allen to host pop ups inside the skate shop soon.<\/p>\n<p>Tylor Navai, the manager of Five Oh, said partnering with Allen and his brand was a \u201cno brainer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met him and I was like \u2018This kid is determined as hell,\u2019\u201d Navai said. \u201cWe do what we can to help others and if we can partner with him to bring attention to his brand and to our shop, it\u2019s a win win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mike Allen, Adam Allen&#8217;s father, is proud of his son&#8217;s success. &#8220;He&#8217;s always been entrepreneurial, so I wasn&#8217;t surprised when he came to me with this idea,&#8221; Mike Allen said.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Allen said he and Adam&#8217;s mom gave up the bonus room to Adam and his brother, Eli, many years ago. &#8220;That&#8217;s always kind of been their hangout spot, so we don&#8217;t really miss it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Allen is hoping to move Boring Cloth out of his family\u2019s bonus room and into a rented warehouse space in the next year. He feels he spends majority of his time printing and fulfilling orders.
