An extraordinary time that required extraordinary journalism
2020 will be remembered as the year of the global pandemic.
The microscopic novel coronavirus that originated in China and wreaked havoc around the globe upended life as we knew it in the United States. For Senior Semester journalism students at the University of South Carolina, it meant a shuttered newsroom, weeks-long quarantine, online classes and fear of the unknown.
But this moment in history also presented opportunities to report on a worldwide health pandemic that had not been seen for a century. The students who scattered to their homes in mid-March operated a daily online newsroom that produced a compelling 15-minute broadcast each day and digital stories on the web that revealed the human drama they were witnessing.
The following reports are the culmination of that work. Take a moment to listen and read.
