A USC student was taken to the hospital around lunchtime Tuesday after an incident near a science building off Assembly Street.
Carolina Alert posted a tweet at 11:17 a.m. today telling individuals to avoid the area on Devine Street, between Main and Assembly streets.
The surrounding roads were closed but reopened around 2 p.m.
University of South Carolina spokesperson Jeff Stensland said there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
The university did not send out a text message or email alert to students per university policy. USC only sends direct alerts during an emergency that poses risk to life and requires action.
The Jones Physical Science Center was taped off. No one was allowed to enter.
Hannah Maise, general manager of Fire House Subs on Main Street, saw the aftermath of the incident and said she was concerned for the student.
