Park renovations have been underway in Columbia. The Finlay Park project is one of the biggest renovations costing the city $24.1 million. But soon, several other parks will start to see new amenities introduced.

The Finlay Park renovations have been one of Columbia’s biggest parks and recreation projects. Renovations have been going on for two years but are planned to be completed this fall.

Finlay Park renovations include:

· Repairs to the spiral fountain.

· New stage and multi-use structures.

· Enhanced lawn space.

· Strolling gardens, walkways, an overlook plaza, restrooms, shade shelter, spray play, a destination playground, and public art.

· Cameras, call boxes, and enhanced lighting for safety.

· Office space for hospitality staff and on-site park rangers.

· Accessibility upgrades.

City of Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation Interim Director Kenya Bryant says they have been working with the neighbors throughout construction.

“We try to be good neighbors with them if there is something new that we are doing that might affect them as far as overnight or whatever the case may be. We communicate with them,” said Bryant.

A few neighbors near Finlay Park are looking forward to its completion.

“I’m excited about it. I mean, it’s been kinda annoying seeing all of the construction over the last two years,” one Arsenal Hill neighbor said. “A lot of my friends have dogs, so we’ve been excited for it to open for that.”

“I think it is going to be great for the community. I’m actually excited about the renovations,” said another Arsenal Hill neighbor.

Finlay Park isn’t the only recreational area that will get a makeover. A new park on Randall Avenue will be getting its first playground. Last year, they added fencing, picnic tables with shelter, and benches to the green space.

Hyatt Park will also see shade sails put over the playground to keep it cool during the summer months. Seven other parks will be upgrading restroom facilities with new hands-free technology.

Parks expecting restroom upgrades include:

· Hyatt Park

· Pinehurst Park

· Katheryn M. Bellfield Booker Washington Heights Cultural Arts Center

· Lorick Park

· T.S. Martin Park

· Eau Claire Print Building

· Charles R. Drew Wellness Center

All the new amenities are being funded through the Community Development Block Grant. Bryant says that parks in the area increase health benefits.

“It’s really for your social well-being, of course for your mental well-being, and it increases your overall health,” said Bryant.

All park renovations should be completed by the fall of this year or sooner. Finlay Park is expected to finish renovations early this fall. The shade sails in Hyatt Park will be installed before the end of June. All other projects will be operational by this fall.
