As Halloween celebrations begin across the Midlands, local law enforcement is reminding both drivers and pedestrians to stay alert, especially in busy areas like Five Points.
Corporal David Jones with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Halloween night often leads to a spike in pedestrian-involved crashes.
“On Halloween, we see pedestrians in all black wearing Halloween costumes, drivers are distracted trying to get to their destinations,” Jones said. “All of this creates a deadly situation.”
Jones added that shorter daylight hours during the fall months also contribute to increased danger for pedestrians.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 176 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes over a four-year span on Halloween. Over 50% of the victims were in their 20s and early 30s.
Jones said planning ahead is one of the best ways to stay safe.
“If you’re going to go out and celebrate, whether it’s at a Halloween costume party or maybe you’re going to Five Points, make sure you have a plan in place,” he said.
He encouraged using rideshare apps or having a designated driver before heading out for the night.
“Don’t be the person to make that poor choice,” Jones said. “If you could wear this uniform for one day, I promise you, you would slow down.”
Jones also told Carolina News that, as with any major holiday, law enforcement will increase DUI patrols on Halloween night.
