Greene Street Records is a student-run organization that gives students real music industry experiences.
The label signed Katie DeMartini last year as its first artist and is expecting to sign more students at the end of this semester as it turns a year old.
The experience is offered through the College of Sport and Entertainment Management.
“The Sport and Entertainment Management Department at the University of South Carolina prepares students for a variety of managerial positions in the sport and entertainment industry,” according to the USC Sport and Entertainment Management website.
The label doesn’t only create experiences for artists but for those who are interested in the behind-the-scenes work of a studio.
“I help out wherever needed,” said USC senior Myrtle Yates. “I really enjoy the business side of things. I’ve been learning a lot about booking shows and conceptualizing plans for marketing, especially from some of our more experienced team members.”
Yates started working with the label this semester and said even though she has only been there a short time, she is “super happy” with the progress that has been made.
“Everyone is enthusiastic about bringing Katie’s ideas to life,” Yates said. “We’re looking to sign our best artists by the end of the semester, which is a huge step in growth for Greene Street.”
Demartini, the first signee, gets to record in the studio and be featured in performances.
“It’s been so cool to have people trust my craft and want to help me make it happen,” DeMartini said. “… I’m so excited for the future of Greene Street Records and my debut album.”
