The Lexington County Fire Department responded early Friday morning to a vehicle fire at the Acapulco Campgrounds that spread to several nearby campers.
When crews arrived, they found three campers and one vehicle fully engulfed in flames.
“All in all, six RVs, one vehicle and a shed were involved,” Fire Marshal Adam Harmon said. “Within about two hours, the fire was under control and effectively extinguished. A joint investigation from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives began.”
Harmon said investigators believe the fire may have started from a fire pit left unattended, though an electrical issue has not been ruled out.
The fire occurred inland from the dock area, spanning from Lot 25 through Lot 29, with additional damage to a camper in Lot 30. Windy conditions likely contributed to the fire’s rapid spread.
The owner of the campground, who declined an on-camera interview, said he believes the fire began when an unattended wood-burning grill ignited a nearby camper. He added that strong winds may have pushed the flames toward a propane tank, triggering an explosion that spread the fire to neighboring campers. In total, four campers were destroyed.
Authorities are still awaiting the official report as the investigation continues.
