An early morning house fire in Lexington, South Carolina, claimed the life of an elderly woman and left her husband critically injured on Tuesday, Oct 14.
According to Lexington fire officials, crews responded to the blaze around 6 a.m. on Gillfield Court, where the couple was trapped inside the burning home. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while her husband was airlifted to the Augusta Burn Center in critical condition.
Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries while battling the fire and are reported to be in stable condition.
A neighbor who witnessed the incident described the scene as “devastating,” saying he woke up to the sound of sirens and saw smoke pouring from the home.
Beltrees Drive, which connects to Gillfield Court, was temporarily closed to allow first responders to extinguish the flames and secure the area.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
One Lexington Fire Chief said investigators are working to determine what sparked the blaze.
